Your first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and decide whether working together feels like a good fit. I see therapy as a collaborative process, and it’s important that you feel comfortable with both the approach and the therapist.
I’ll invite you to talk about what has brought you to therapy, the difficulties you’re experiencing and what you hope to gain from our work together. Some people arrive with a clear idea of what they want to change, while others just know that something isn’t working or that life has become overwhelming. Both are absolutely fine.
I’ll also ask some questions to help me build a fuller understanding of your situation, including relevant background and what you may already have tried. Where appropriate, I may suggest completing questionnaires to help us understand your difficulties and track your progress over time.
You’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions too. I’ll explain how I work, what therapy may involve and what you can expect from the process.
At the end of the session, you can decide whether you’d like to continue. There’s no obligation to commit to further sessions; what matters is that you feel comfortable and confident about working together.
-
Therapy sessions are usually weekly to maintain the momentum for making changes. However, if appropriate, we can discuss meeting less frequently as you progress.
-
The length of therapy will depend on what you’re experiencing, what you’d like to work on and how therapy progresses. CBT typically lasts around 12–20 sessions, although some people make significant progress within six sessions, while others benefit from working together for longer. We’ll review your progress regularly and decide together what feels appropriate.

Yes. What we discuss in therapy is confidential, with some limited exceptions where I have professional or legal responsibilities to share information.
Supervision
As a member of the BABCP and BACP, I undertake regular clinical supervision to support safe, ethical and effective practice. I may discuss aspects of our work during supervision, but this is done without identifying you. My supervisor is also bound by professional confidentiality requirements.
Risk of harm
There may be circumstances in which I need to share information if I have serious concerns about your safety or the safety of someone else. Wherever possible and appropriate, I would discuss this with you first.
Legal and safeguarding responsibilities
There are also limited circumstances in which I may be legally or professionally required to share information, including certain safeguarding concerns or where disclosure is required by law.
I will explain confidentiality and its limits when we begin working together, and you are welcome to ask questions about this at any point.
